Vaginal Micronized Progesterone for Endometrial Hyperplasia

Introduction to Vaginal Micronized Progesterone

  • Vaginal formulations of micronized progesterone do not contain peanut oil, making them suitable for patients with severe peanut allergies, as recommended by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists 1, 2

Clinical Considerations

  • Women with intact uterus receiving estrogen therapy must receive adequate progestogen for at least 10-14 days per month to prevent hyperplasia, according to guidelines from the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists 3

Contraindications

  • Hormone receptor-positive breast cancer is a contraindication to all progesterone therapy, including micronized progesterone, as stated by the American Society of Clinical Oncology 1, 2
  • Severe peanut allergies (anaphylaxis) contraindicate oral micronized progesterone capsules containing peanut oil; use vaginal gel formulations instead, as recommended by the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology 1, 2
