Duration of Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine Protection in Children

Understanding PCV Protection Duration

  • The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that the standard 4-dose PCV13 series provides durable protection throughout childhood without additional booster doses for healthy children 1, 2
  • For healthy children who complete the recommended PCV13 series, no additional pneumococcal conjugate vaccine doses are recommended after age 5 years, as stated by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention 4, 5
  • Healthy children aged 2-59 months maintain protection throughout early childhood after completing the age-appropriate series, with no routine booster doses recommended beyond the toddler dose at 12-15 months, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention 1, 2
  • Children with underlying medical conditions, such as immunocompromising conditions, functional or anatomic asplenia, CSF leaks, or cochlear implants, require a supplemental PCV13 dose through age 71 months and should also receive PPSV23 after completing all recommended PCV13 doses, as recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention 1, 3, 4, 6
  • Children aged 6-18 years with high-risk conditions may receive a single dose of PCV13 if they have not received it previously, reflecting the need for additional protection in immunocompromised populations, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report 4, 5, 7

Evidence of Long-Term Effectiveness

  • Clinical trial data demonstrates that PCV7 is 97.4% efficacious against invasive pneumococcal disease caused by vaccine serotypes among fully vaccinated infants, as reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention 6
