Brimonidina for Glaucoma Treatment

Efficacy and Usage

  • The American Academy of Ophthalmology recommends the use of brimonidina in combination with dorzolamida-timolol when a single agent fails to reach the target intraocular pressure, as combination therapies often provide additive effects 3
  • In studies with 114 clinical trials and 20,275 participants, all first-line medications were effective compared to placebo, with bimatoprost, latanoprost, and travoprost being the most effective, although brimonidina is a valid option 1
  • Brimonidina may protect retinal ganglion cells and their projections from damage and death, independent of its effects on intraocular pressure, but the evidence is of low certainty and does not allow for definitive conclusions about neuroprotective effects 1, 2

Safety Considerations

  • Brimonidina has a pregnancy category B classification by the FDA, with animal studies showing no fetal risk, but no controlled studies in pregnant women 4, 5, 6
  • Brimonidina is generally not recommended for use in breastfeeding mothers, as it can cause apnea and somnolence in infants and young children 4, 5, 6, 7
