Approved Uses of Progesterone

  • The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends 17-hydroxyprogesterone caproate (17P) 250 mg IM weekly for women with prior spontaneous preterm birth, or vaginal progesterone (90-mg gel or 200-mg suppository) for short cervical length, with a moderate strength of evidence 1, 2
  • The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists suggests that progesterone is not interchangeable with progestin-only pills, and routes of administration, such as injectable 17P, vaginal progesterone, and oral progestins, are not interchangeable and serve distinct clinical purposes, with a moderate strength of evidence 2, 3
