Administration of Hyoscine Bromide with Saline Solution

Preparation and Administration Guidelines

  • The American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine recommends diluting hyoscine bromide with sterile normal saline solution (0.9% sodium chloride) without preservatives for intravenous administration 1
  • For slow intravenous infusion, add the prescribed dose of hyoscine bromide to 10-15 mL of sterile normal saline solution (NaCl 0.9%) 1
  • The American Academy of Pediatrics suggests diluting hyoscine bromide in a minimum of 2-3 mL of saline solution for nebulization 2

Safety Considerations

  • The American Heart Association recommends avoiding solutions with preservatives like phenol, as they can cause paradoxical bronchoconstrictive responses in some patients, especially in nebulizer formulations 1
  • The American College of Cardiology advises against mixing hyoscine bromide with sodium bicarbonate or other alkaline solutions, as anticholinergic agents can be inactivated in alkaline media 3

Administration Protocol

  • Administer hyoscine bromide slowly over 5-10 minutes when diluted in 10-15 mL of saline solution 1
  • Store diluted solutions at room temperature and prepare immediately before use 1

Prevention of Common Errors

  • Always use isotonic saline solution (0.9%) to avoid hemolysis and injection site pain 1
  • Avoid excessive dilutions, as volumes greater than 15-20 mL are unnecessary for IV administration and may prolong infusion time unnecessarily 1
