GLP-1 Receptor Agonists and Breast Cancer Risk

Clinical Recommendations

  • The American Heart Association and Heart Failure Society of America do not list breast cancer as a concern when prescribing GLP-1 receptor agonists, with primary safety concerns including gastrointestinal side effects, thyroid C-cell tumors, and potential cardiovascular effects such as increased heart rate 1, 2, 3
  • Clinicians should follow standard breast cancer screening guidelines as recommended for the general population when initiating GLP-1 RAs, with monitoring for common side effects including gastrointestinal symptoms, potential gallbladder disorders, and cardiac arrhythmias/tachycardia 4

Monitoring Considerations

  • Patients on GLP-1 RAs should maintain regular breast cancer screening according to standard guidelines, with awareness that significant weight loss with these medications may improve detection of previously undetected breast masses 5
