Sling Technique in Breast Augmentation

Preoperative Considerations

  • The American Cancer Society recommends meticulous hemostasis to prevent hematoma formation, which can complicate physical examination and mammographic interpretation 1
  • The American College of Surgeons suggests that drains in the breast should be avoided to minimize complications 1

Postoperative Care

  • The American College of Radiology recommends regular monitoring for implant rupture starting at 5-6 years post-surgery, with imaging every 2-3 years thereafter 4
  • The American Society of Plastic Surgeons advises that the first imaging study should occur at 5-6 years postoperative (ultrasound or MRI), followed by every 2-3 years for asymptomatic patients with silicone implants 4

Contraindications and Risks

  • The American Heart Association notes that smoking and obesity increase the risk of complications for all types of breast reduction and reconstruction, and are considered relative contraindications 3, 4
