Tumor Markers for Squamous Cell Carcinoma Diagnosis and Monitoring

Immunohistochemical Markers

  • The National Comprehensive Cancer Network recommends using CK5/6, which is highly sensitive (84%) for poorly differentiated squamous cell carcinomas, and CK7-negative/CK20-negative pattern can help identify certain SCC types 1
  • p63 shows high immunoreactivity (86%) in poorly differentiated SCCs and is useful for identifying squamous differentiation, with p40 (DNp63) having superior sensitivity and specificity (approaching 100%) for squamous differentiation compared to p63 1, 2
  • A minimal panel of p40 and TTF-1 can effectively distinguish squamous cell carcinoma from adenocarcinoma in small biopsy samples, as suggested by the American College of Chest Physicians 2
