Imaging Characteristics of Dance and Jones Fractures

Radiographic and MRI Findings

  • On radiographs, dance fractures appear as transverse fractures at the base of the fifth metatarsal tuberosity, according to the American College of Radiology 1
  • Jones fractures appear as transverse fractures at the junction of the metaphysis and diaphysis, approximately 1.5-2 cm distal to the tuberosity, as reported by the American College of Radiology 1, 2
  • MRI is useful for detecting both types of fractures when radiographs are negative or inconclusive, showing bone marrow edema patterns, as noted by the American College of Radiology 2, 3
