Management of Bacterial Sinus Infections

Medication Administration and Side Effects

  • Consider taking Augmentin with food to reduce gastrointestinal upset, and some patients may prefer taking the medication at bedtime to avoid nausea during waking hours, as suggested by the Leukemia journal in 2016 1
  • For mild to moderate diarrhea, make dietary modifications, such as eliminating lactose-containing products, and consider over-the-counter antidiarrheals like loperamide if diarrhea is troublesome, according to the Journal of Clinical Oncology in 2004 2

Monitoring and Follow-up

  • Monitor for signs of severe adverse reactions, including severe diarrhea lasting more than 2-3 days, bloody stools, signs of allergic reaction, and worsening of neurological symptoms, as recommended by the American Academy of Family Physicians and general medical practice 1, 2
  • Contact a healthcare provider immediately if severe diarrhea, signs of allergic reaction, worsening neurological symptoms, fever, severe headache, or visual changes occur 2
  • Complete the full 7-day course of Augmentin as originally prescribed to ensure effective treatment of sinus infections, as recommended by the American Academy of Otolaryngology and the Infectious Diseases Society of America 3
  • If symptoms persist beyond completion of the full 7-day course, further evaluation would be warranted to determine if a different antibiotic or longer duration of therapy is needed, as recommended by the American Academy of Otolaryngology 3
  • Monitor for worsening symptoms after resuming antibiotics for 72 hours, and seek immediate medical attention if symptoms worsen, high fever develops, or severe headache, visual changes, facial pain, or bloody diarrhea occur, as recommended by the American College of Physicians 4
  • Continue supportive care measures, including adequate hydration, saline nasal irrigation, rest, and over-the-counter pain relievers if needed, to manage symptoms during antibiotic treatment, as recommended by the American College of Physicians 4
  • Patients who have ongoing signs of infection beyond 7 days of antibiotic treatment warrant further diagnostic investigation, as recommended by the World Journal of Emergency Surgery guidelines 5
  • Completing the full 7-day course of antibiotic treatment as originally prescribed is crucial to ensure effective treatment and minimize the risk of resistance, with a low risk of developing resistance after taking only a few doses if the organism remains susceptible to the antibiotic, according to the World Journal of Emergency Surgery guidelines 5
