Discontinuing Carvedilol

Critical Warning About Abrupt Discontinuation

  • The American College of Cardiology recommends that beta-blockers, including carvedilol, must never be stopped abruptly due to the risk of severe complications, such as clinical deterioration in heart failure patients, with a warning explicitly stated by the FDA 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7
  • The American Heart Association warns that abrupt discontinuation of carvedilol can cause clinical deterioration in heart failure patients, as stated in the Circulation journal 8

Monitoring During Discontinuation

  • The American College of Cardiology suggests monitoring for blood pressure changes, which may rise after discontinuation of carvedilol, with evidence from the Journal of the American College of Cardiology 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7
  • The American Heart Association recommends monitoring for worsening heart failure symptoms, such as dyspnea, edema, and fatigue, in patients discontinuing carvedilol, as stated in the Circulation journal 8

Special Considerations

  • The Journal of Hepatology suggests that discontinuation of carvedilol during acute illness, such as bleeding, sepsis, or acute kidney injury, requires immediate medical supervision 9
