Causes and Management of Hot Flashes in Young People

Primary Causes

  • Cancer treatments, including endocrine therapies for breast cancer, chemotherapy-induced ovarian dysfunction, and surgical procedures affecting hormonal balance, are significant causes of hot flashes in young people 1, 2, 3
  • Hormonal changes, such as premature menopause, discontinuation of hormone therapy, and hormonal fluctuations, can trigger hot flashes in younger individuals 1, 2
  • Certain medications, including dopamine-reuptake inhibitors used to treat ADHD and diuretics that affect hydration or thermoregulation, can cause hot flashes 2, 4

Medical Conditions Associated with Hot Flashes

  • Endocrine disorders, such as juvenile hyperthyroidism, type 2 diabetes mellitus, and diabetes insipidus, can trigger hot flashes 4
  • Other medical conditions, including obesity, cystic fibrosis, and sickle cell trait, may present with hot flashes 1, 4

Environmental and Lifestyle Triggers

  • Dietary factors, such as spicy foods, alcohol consumption, and caffeine, can precipitate hot flashes 1, 5
  • Environmental conditions, including hot environments, use of heat sources, and overheating during physical activity, may trigger episodes 1, 4
  • Behavioral factors, such as smoking, stress and anxiety, and sleep deprivation, can exacerbate hot flashes 1, 4

Management Approaches

  • Lifestyle modifications, including dressing in layers, avoiding overheating, and using natural fiber clothing, are first-line interventions 1
  • Pharmacological options, such as SNRIs and SSRIs, may be considered for persistent, disruptive hot flashes 1
  • Non-pharmacological approaches, including acupuncture, cognitive behavioral therapy, and relaxation techniques, can help reduce hot flash symptoms 1
  • For cancer survivors, megestrol acetate may be considered when hot flashes are related to cancer treatment 3
