Risks of Street Ketamine

Physical Health Risks

  • Ketamine produces dose-dependent increases in heart rate, blood pressure, and cardiac output through sympathetic nervous system stimulation, making it particularly dangerous for individuals with pre-existing ischemic heart disease, cerebrovascular disease, or hypertension 1, 2
  • Ketamine can increase upper airway secretions, and when combined with other central nervous system depressants, serious respiratory depression can occur, although this specific point is not directly cited, a related fact is that ketamine generally doesn't cause respiratory depression at low doses 3

Psychological and Neurological Risks

  • Emergence reactions, including floating sensations, vivid dreams, hallucinations, and delirium, occur in 10-30% of adults 1
  • Ketamine can cause amnesia for the time during which the drug exerts its action 4

Special Risk Considerations

  • Ketamine has been used as a "date-rape drug" due to its sedative and amnestic properties, with effects occurring within 20 minutes of ingestion and lasting for up to 3 hours, and can be detected in urine for 24-72 hours after ingestion 4
