Treatment Options for Chemosis

First-Line Treatments

  • Topical corticosteroids are the most effective first-line treatment for chemosis, especially in cases with marked chemosis, lid swelling, or epithelial sloughing, as recommended by the American Academy of Ophthalmology 1
  • Topical corticosteroids reduce inflammation and are particularly helpful in severe cases with marked chemosis or lid swelling, according to the American Academy of Ophthalmology 1
  • Cold compresses provide symptomatic relief by reducing edema and inflammation, as suggested by the Ophthalmology journal 1

Special Considerations

  • Prolonged use of topical corticosteroids requires monitoring for increased intraocular pressure and cataract formation, as advised by the American Academy of Ophthalmology 1
  • For adenoviral conjunctivitis with chemosis, be aware that corticosteroid use may prolong viral shedding, as noted by the American Academy of Ophthalmology 1
