Approach to Splenic Granuloma Management

Surgical Considerations

  • Splenectomy is rarely indicated for granulomas alone, and when necessary, lifelong vaccination protocols are mandatory, including pneumococcal, meningococcal, and Haemophilus influenzae type B vaccines, plus antibiotic prophylaxis to prevent overwhelming post-splenectomy infection (OPSI), according to Praxis Medical Insights 1
  • Vaccination should be administered no sooner than 14 days post-splenectomy to prevent overwhelming post-splenectomy infection (OPSI), as recommended by the World Journal of Emergency Surgery and Praxis Medical Insights 1, 2

Post-Splenectomy Care

  • The American College of Surgeons recommends lifelong vaccination protocols and antibiotic prophylaxis for patients undergoing splenectomy, including pneumococcal, meningococcal, and Haemophilus influenzae type B vaccines 2
