Ammonium Lactate for Itchy Skin Conditions

Clinical Indications and Usage

  • The British Journal of Dermatology recommends ammonium lactate for ichthyosis vulgaris with itching, as it demonstrates effectiveness in removing scales 1, 2
  • For xerosis-associated pruritus, ammonium lactate is a suitable option, but it is not appropriate for all types of pruritus, and other approaches are preferred for generalized pruritus without xerosis 3
  • The BMJ suggests that for inflammatory pruritus, such as eczema or dermatitis, topical corticosteroids are the mainstay of treatment, not keratolytics alone 4

Safety and Application Guidelines

  • The British Journal of Dermatology advises avoiding application of ammonium lactate on the face, flexures, and areas of fissuring, as keratolytics may induce irritation 1
  • Ammonium lactate 12% lotion can be applied once or twice daily, ideally after bathing to improve skin hydration, and it is recommended to combine it with emollients to maintain skin hydration 1, 2

Treatment Outcomes and Considerations

  • If inadequate response occurs after 2-4 weeks of treatment with ammonium lactate, consider adding topical corticosteroids for any inflammatory component, or reassess the underlying cause of pruritus 3, 4
