Cutaneous Larva Migrans Treatment Guidelines

Introduction to Treatment Options

  • The World Health Organization and other authorities support the use of ivermectin and albendazole for the treatment of cutaneous larva migrans, with ivermectin being the preferred option for multiple or diffuse lesions 1, 2

Disease Characteristics

  • Cutaneous larva migrans is characterized by a serpiginous, itchy rash migrating at 1-2 cm per day, often associated with beach exposure, and typically affects feet, buttocks, and abdomen 1

Treatment Recommendations

  • For standard cases, the World Health Organization suggests ivermectin 200 μg/kg single dose, but if ivermectin is unavailable, albendazole 400 mg daily for 3 days can be considered, with a standard 3-day course recommended to reduce the risk of relapse 1
  • Ivermectin is recommended at 200 μg/kg as a single oral dose (approximately 12 mg for a 59 kg adult) 1, 2
  • Albendazole can be used as an alternative, with a dosage of 400 mg orally daily for 3 days 2, 1

Special Considerations
