Iron Sucrose Administration in Pediatric Patients

Dosing and Administration

  • The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends iron sucrose for use in children with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) from 2 years of age, with regular monitoring of iron status to prevent iron deficiency and iron overload 1
  • Iron sucrose is preferred for pediatric use due to its low risk of severe adverse events, and no test dose is required, unlike iron dextran 1, 2

Safety and Efficacy

  • Systemic iron toxicity with hepatocellular damage has been reported in a pediatric patient receiving an excessive dose of iron sucrose, highlighting the importance of proper dosing 1
  • Enteral iron supplementation is preferred over parenteral iron, but parenteral iron supplementation is recommended for patients who cannot maintain adequate iron status using enteral supplements 1
