Management of Naproxen Overdose

Administration Protocol

  • The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends a pediatric dose of 1-2g/kg body weight of activated charcoal for naproxen overdose management 1
  • Activated charcoal should be administered as a slurry in water, according to the Hepatology society 2, 3
  • Formulations containing sorbitol as a cathartic should be used cautiously, especially in children, as hypernatremic dehydration has been reported after repeated doses, as noted by the Pediatrics society 1

Clinical Considerations and Contraindications

  • Activated charcoal is contraindicated in patients with active gastrointestinal bleeding, as stated by the Hepatology society 3
  • Activated charcoal is also contraindicated in patients with risk of gastrointestinal perforation, although this guideline is from a less preferred source 4
