Sucralfate Administration Timing

Interaction with Other Medications

  • The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that drugs that decrease gastric acidity, such as PPIs or H2-blockers, or sucralfate should be administered at least 2 hours apart from each other 1
  • The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also recommends that for ketoconazole specifically, sucralfate should be administered at least 2 hours after the antifungal medication 1

Special Patient Populations

  • The European Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy notes that for patients with feeding tubes, sucralfate can cause tube blockage, especially when combined with crushed tablets or certain medications 2
  • The American Gastroenterological Association recommends that in patients with bile reflux, sucralfate may be used as part of management, but proper timing (away from meals) is essential for effectiveness 3
  • The Society of Critical Care Medicine suggests that when used for stress ulcer prophylaxis in critically ill patients, proper timing remains important to maintain its protective effect 4, 5

Administration Considerations

  • The European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases advises that crushing tablets and mixing with acidic beverages or food can reduce efficacy 2
