Diagnosis and Management of Subacute Cutaneous Lupus Erythematosus
Diagnostic Approach
- Diagnosis of Subacute Cutaneous Lupus Erythematosus (SCLE) requires evaluation by an experienced dermatologist and often a skin biopsy for histological analysis, as recommended by the European League Against Rheumatism 1
- Follow-up repeat biopsy is recommended if there is a change in the clinical morphology of the lesions or lack of response to treatment, according to the European League Against Rheumatism 1
- The Cutaneous Lupus Disease Area and Severity Index (CLASI) may be used to assess disease activity and damage, as suggested by the European League Against Rheumatism 1
Prognosis and Monitoring
- Regular monitoring for development of systemic involvement is recommended for patients with SCLE, as advised by the European League Against Rheumatism 1
- Neonatal lupus may occur in infants of mothers with anti-Ro/SSA antibodies, highlighting the importance of careful monitoring and management during pregnancy, as noted by the European League Against Rheumatism 1
