Pediatric Polyethylene Glycol (PEG) 3350 Dosage and Administration

Dosing and Titration

  • The American Gastroenterological Association recommends adjusting the dose every 3 days based on stool frequency and consistency to achieve the target of 1-2 soft stools per day, with no maximum dose clearly defined, but titrate based on symptom response and tolerability 1, 2, 3
  • PEG 3350 maintains efficacy over 6 months without loss of effect in pediatric patients 4

Special Considerations

  • For colonoscopy preparation, a dose of 1.5 g/kg/day for 4 days prior to the procedure is recommended, with a clear liquid diet on day 4, and maintaining adequate hydration, especially in young children 5
  • PEG 3350 causes significantly fewer mucosal lesions (2.3%) compared to sodium phosphate (24.5%) in pediatric patients 5

Safety Profile

  • The American Gastroenterological Association notes that PEG 3350 is well-tolerated across all pediatric age groups with minimal adverse effects, and ensuring adequate hydration is essential as it is an osmotic laxative 1, 2, 4
