Voriconazole Treatment for Serious Fungal Infections

Treatment Duration and Dosing

  • The treatment duration for invasive aspergillosis should continue until resolution or stabilization of all clinical and radiographic manifestations, as recommended by the Infectious Diseases Society of America 1
  • For candidemia in non-neutropenic patients, treatment duration should be at least 14 days following resolution of symptoms or following last positive culture, whichever is longer, according to the Infectious Diseases Society of America 2
  • The typical treatment course for esophageal candidiasis is 14-21 days until clinical improvement is seen, as suggested by the Infectious Diseases Society of America 3
  • Voriconazole is a preferred agent for CNS infections, such as aspergillosis and candidiasis, due to its good CNS penetration, as recommended by the Infectious Diseases Society of America 3, 4
  • Follow-up blood cultures should be obtained for all patients with candidemia to ensure clearance, as recommended by the Infectious Diseases Society of America 2

Special Considerations

  • For patients with CNS infections, be aware of drug interactions, particularly with anticonvulsants, as warned by the Infectious Diseases Society of America 4
