Vaccination Guidelines for Premature Infants
Limitations of Age and License
- The FDA has authorized Bexsero for individuals aged 10 to 25 years, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) 1, 2, 3
- The American College of Physicians, as per the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) guidelines, confirms that there are no recommendations for the use of MenB vaccines, including Bexsero, in children under 10 years of age 4
- The use of Bexsero outside of this age range is considered off-label, as stated by the ACIP 4
Practical Recommendations
For Premature Infants
- Bexsero should not be administered to premature infants outside of approved research protocols or exceptional situations, due to the lack of regulatory approval and guideline recommendations, as advised by the ACIP 1, 2, 4
When the Child Reaches 10 Years
- For premature infants with high-risk conditions, such as complement deficiency or anatomical or functional asplenia, Bexsero can be administered starting at 10 years of age with a 2-dose schedule at least 1 month apart, as recommended by the CDC 1, 2, 3, 5
Important Precautions
- Premature birth is listed as a precaution for the MenACWY-CRM vaccine due to the risk of post-vaccination apnea observed in some premature infants, as noted by the ACIP 6
- The caps of prefilled Bexsero syringes contain natural rubber latex, which is a precaution for allergic reactions, as stated by the ACIP 6
