Medication Safety in G6PD Deficiency

Contraindicated Medications

  • Rasburicase is contraindicated in G6PD deficiency due to the risk of severe hemolysis, as reported by the Journal of Clinical Oncology 1, 2
  • Methylene blue (methylthioninium chloride) can induce hemolysis and worsen methemoglobinemia in G6PD deficiency, according to the American Journal of Hematology 3, 4, 5

Clinical Approach

  • Assessing the patient's G6PD deficiency status is crucial, as severity can vary based on genetic variant and ethnic background, as noted by the American Journal of Hematology 3, 6
  • Monitoring for signs of hemolysis, including jaundice, dark urine, fatigue, and pallor, is essential when starting new medications in G6PD-deficient patients, as recommended by the American Journal of Hematology 6, 7
  • Immediately discontinuing the offending agent is necessary in cases of suspected medication-induced hemolysis, as advised by the American Journal of Hematology 6
