Treatment of Flight Phobia with Escitalopram

Efficacy and Dosage

  • A Japanese study demonstrated that escitalopram at 20mg produced statistically significant reduction in anxiety symptoms compared to placebo, in patients with anxiety disorders, including specific phobias like flight phobia 1, 2
  • The American Psychiatric Association recommends starting with escitalopram 10mg daily and considering increasing to 20mg if needed after 4-6 weeks of treatment if response is inadequate, for patients with flight phobia 1, 2

Treatment Duration and Combination Therapy

  • Treatment should be continued for at least 8-12 weeks to properly evaluate efficacy, and long-term treatment (6 months or longer) is recommended after remission to prevent relapse, in patients with flight phobia 2
  • Combining escitalopram with cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) has demonstrated greater efficacy than medication alone for anxiety disorders, including flight phobia, according to the National Institute of Mental Health 2

Monitoring and Side Effects

  • Most adverse events are typically mild and tend to diminish after the first few weeks of treatment, with common side effects including fatigue, somnolence, nausea, and dry mouth, in patients taking escitalopram for flight phobia 2
  • Regular monitoring of treatment response using standardized anxiety scales is recommended, to assess the efficacy of escitalopram in patients with flight phobia 2
