Lead Encephalopathy Treatment Guidelines

Clinical Management

  • The American College of Medical Toxicology recommends immediate chelation therapy with blood lead levels ≥100 μg/dL, as these levels are associated with significant symptoms and risk of seizures 1
  • Chelation treatment should be considered for blood lead levels 80-99 μg/dL, regardless of symptoms, and for blood lead levels 50-79 μg/dL if symptomatic 1
  • Physical and occupational therapy should be provided to address motor deficits 2
  • Blood lead levels should be monitored regularly, and the source of lead exposure should be identified and eliminated 1
