Initiating Venlafaxine for Perimenopause Symptoms

Dosing and Administration

  • The American College of Oncology recommends starting with venlafaxine 37.5-75 mg daily for symptom control, with the optimal dose for hot flash reduction typically being 75 mg daily, with limited additional benefit at higher doses 2

Common Side Effects

  • Initial side effects of venlafaxine may include nausea, dry mouth, decreased appetite, and constipation, which are typically dose-related and often improve after the first 1-2 weeks of treatment 2
  • Unlike some medications, venlafaxine may not negatively impact sexual function; some studies show improved libido in women taking it for hot flashes 2

Important Precautions

  • Blood pressure should be monitored, as venlafaxine can occasionally cause increases, according to the Ca-A Cancer Journal for Clinicians 3, 4
  • The American College of Oncology recommends that when discontinuing venlafaxine, the medication should be tapered gradually to avoid withdrawal symptoms 2

Complementary Approaches

  • The American College of Medical Insights recommends environmental modifications, such as dressing in layers and keeping rooms cool, to enhance medication effectiveness 1
  • Identifying and avoiding personal triggers, such as spicy foods, caffeine, and alcohol, is also recommended by the American College of Medical Insights 1
