Comprehensive Ophthalmic Examination Components for Primary Congenital Glaucoma EUA

Gonioscopic Evaluation

  • In children undergoing examination under anesthesia for primary congenital glaucoma, a gonioscopic assessment should be performed to verify that the anterior chamber angles are open and to evaluate trabecular meshwork anatomy, facilitating appropriate surgical planning. 1

Optic Nerve and Retinal Nerve Fiber Layer Assessment

  • A stereoscopic optic nerve examination is recommended during EUA to identify vertical cup elongation, focal rim thinning (particularly at the superior and inferior poles), disc hemorrhages, and retinal nerve‑fiber‑layer defects, which are critical signs for disease severity and progression. 2

Dilated Fundus Examination

  • After adequate pharmacologic dilation, an indirect ophthalmoscopic funduscopic examination should be carried out to document posterior segment findings and ensure comprehensive evaluation of the globe in pediatric primary congenital glaucoma patients. 3
