Chamomile Interactions with Anticoagulants and Antiplatelet Agents

High-Risk Interactions

  • The American Heart Association recommends that patients with liver disease, who have impaired coagulation factor synthesis, should be cautious when using chamomile due to its anticoagulant effects 1
  • The European Society of Cardiology suggests that renal impairment increases bleeding risk with anticoagulants, and chamomile adds further risk if these drugs are co-administered 2, 3
  • The use of NSAIDs combined with chamomile and any anticoagulant creates particularly high bleeding risk through multiple mechanisms, according to the European Heart Journal 1, 2

Special Population Considerations

  • Patients with hepatic or renal impairment should exercise caution when using chamomile, as it may increase bleeding risk, as noted in Circulation: Arrhythmia and Electrophysiology 1
  • Polypharmacy patients should have their medications systematically reviewed before allowing chamomile use, to minimize the risk of adverse interactions, as recommended by Circulation: Arrhythmia and Electrophysiology 1, 4
