Gluteus Medius Strengthening Guidelines

Training Parameters

  • The American College of Rheumatology recommends training the gluteus medius 2-3 days per week with at least 48 hours rest between sessions, performing 8-12 repetitions for most adults, and completing 2-4 sets per exercise for optimal strength gains 1, 2, 3
  • The American College of Rheumatology suggests that for novice to intermediate exercisers, the intensity should be 60-70% of 1RM (moderate to hard intensity), while for older adults or beginners, the intensity should be 40-50% of 1RM (very light to light intensity) 1, 2, 3
  • For experienced strength trainers, the American College of Rheumatology recommends an intensity of ≥80% of 1RM for maximal strength improvements 3, 4
  • The American College of Rheumatology advises allowing 2-3 minutes rest between sets and ensuring ≥48 hours between training sessions for the same muscle group 1, 2

Progressive Overload

  • Progressive overload is essential, and the American College of Sports Medicine recommends systematically increasing resistance when the current workload can be performed for 1-2 repetitions over the desired number on two consecutive sessions 4
  • Without progressive overload, strength gains plateau, as noted by the American College of Sports Medicine 3, 4
