Treatment of Volar Plate Avulsion Fracture of the Index Finger

Initial Assessment and Timing

  • Patients presenting within 3 weeks of injury have significantly better outcomes, and delayed presentation worsens prognosis regardless of treatment method, emphasizing the importance of early mobilization to prevent hand stiffness 1

Postoperative Protocol and Expected Outcomes

  • Early mobilization after injury or surgery prevents the functionally disabling complication of finger stiffness, and immobilization in a dorsal protective splint for 2 weeks is recommended before starting active range of motion exercises 1
  • Failure to encourage immediate active mobilization in stable injuries leads to severe stiffness, requiring multiple therapy visits and potentially surgical intervention, which is entirely preventable with early motion 1
