Omeprazole Administration Timing

Introduction to Optimal Timing

  • The American Gastroenterological Association recommends taking omeprazole 30-60 minutes before meals for optimal efficacy, as this allows the drug to be present in the system when food triggers acid production 1

Dosage and Administration

  • For twice-daily dosing, the American College of Gastroenterology suggests taking doses 30 minutes before morning and evening meals 2
  • In patients with H. pylori, the Infectious Diseases Society of America recommends giving PPIs 30 minutes before meals, as seen in studies with excellent outcomes in Shanghai 3, 4

Special Patient Populations

  • For patients who cannot swallow the capsule whole, the FDA approves opening it and sprinkling the contents on one tablespoon of applesauce, then swallowing immediately with cool water, but this must still be done before meals, and is particularly useful for pediatric patients 1
