Methocarbamol for Musculoskeletal Conditions

Clinical Evidence and Guidelines

  • The American College of Physicians/American Pain Society guidelines classify skeletal muscle relaxants, including methocarbamol, as an option for short-term relief of acute low back pain, though all are associated with central nervous system adverse effects, primarily sedation 1

Safety and Precautions

  • Methocarbamol is associated with common side effects including drowsiness, dizziness, bradycardia, and hypotension 2
  • The drug should be avoided in patients with certain conditions and used with caution perioperatively due to cardiovascular effects 2
  • In elderly patients or those with cardiovascular disease, methocarbamol may be preferred over cyclobenzaprine due to lower anticholinergic burden and fewer cardiovascular effects 3
  • All muscle relaxants, including methocarbamol, increase fall risk and require cautious use in older adults 3
