Tamiflu Dosing Guidelines for Infants

Treatment Dosing

  • The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends 25 mg of Tamiflu twice daily for infants aged 6-11 months 1
  • For term infants 0-8 months, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends 3 mg/kg per dose twice daily for 5 days 2

Prophylaxis Dosing

  • For post-exposure prophylaxis in a 6-month-old, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends 3 mg/kg once daily for 10 days following close contact with an infected individual 2

Formulation and Administration

  • The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends administering Tamiflu with food to improve gastrointestinal tolerability 1

Critical Timing Considerations

  • Treatment should be started within 48 hours of symptom onset for maximum effectiveness 2

Special Considerations for Young Infants

  • For preterm infants <38 weeks postmenstrual age, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends 1.0 mg/kg twice daily 2
  • Premature infants have slower clearance due to immature renal function, and standard doses may lead to very high drug concentrations 1

Safety Profile in Young Infants

  • Oseltamivir is FDA-approved for treatment in infants as young as 2 weeks of age 2

Clinical Pearls

  • The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends taking oseltamivir with meals to improve tolerability in young children 1
  • Any infant hospitalized with presumed influenza should receive treatment 1
