Hyoscine N-Butylbromide Administration Guidelines

Pharmacokinetics and Administration

  • The intravenous route is preferred for rapid onset of hyoscine N-butylbromide, with an onset time of 3-5 minutes, while intramuscular administration has an onset time of 20-30 minutes, with a duration of action of approximately 30-60 minutes, according to the Anaesthesia guideline society 1
  • Patients with cardiac conditions should be monitored for heart rate during and after administration of hyoscine N-butylbromide, particularly to avoid exacerbating tachyarrhythmias or significant cardiac disease, as recommended by the Anaesthesia guideline society 1

Special Considerations

  • The American Society of Anesthesiologists recommends avoiding hyoscine N-butylbromide in patients with tachyarrhythmias or significant cardiac disease without careful monitoring, as stated in the Anaesthesia journal 1
