CPAP Therapy for Obstructive Sleep Apnea
Clinical Assessment and Medical Necessity
- The American Academy of Sleep Medicine recommends CPAP therapy for adults with moderate to severe Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA), with high-quality evidence showing significant improvement in sleepiness and other OSA-related symptoms, in patients with an Apnea-Hypopnea Index (AHI) of 32.1/hr or higher 1, 2
- Patients with OSA who are 100% compliant with CPAP usage show significant clinical improvement, with a residual AHI of 0.7/hr or lower, indicating effective treatment 3
- The American Academy of Sleep Medicine recommends heated humidification with PAP devices to improve patient comfort and reduce side effects, such as dry mouth/throat, nasal congestion, and other upper airway symptoms, in adults with OSA 7
Benefits of Heated Humidification
- Heated humidification is recommended to reduce side effects that may occur during treatment of adults with OSA, including dry mouth/throat, nasal congestion, and other upper airway symptoms, with meta-analyses demonstrating clinically significant reduction in multiple side effects 1, 5, 6
- The addition of heated humidification is indicated to improve PAP utilization, particularly in patients who experience upper airway symptoms or significant oral or nasal dryness 7, 8
