Risperidone Safety in Mild Hyponatremia

Assessment of Hyponatremia Severity

  • A sodium level of 134 mmol/L does not meet the threshold for persistent hyponatremia that would be considered a clinical indicator of advanced heart failure, according to the American College of Cardiology 2

Risperidone Safety Considerations

  • Risperidone 0.5 mg twice daily can be safely initiated in a patient with mild hyponatremia, as this level of hyponatremia is not a contraindication for starting risperidone therapy, as recommended by Praxis Medical Insights 1

Monitoring Recommendations

  • Monitor serum sodium levels regularly after initiating risperidone, especially during the first few weeks of treatment, and evaluate for other causes of hyponatremia if sodium levels drop below 130 mmol/L, as recommended by Praxis Medical Insights 1
  • If sodium levels drop below 130 mmol/L, assess volume status to determine appropriate management, as recommended by Praxis Medical Insights 1
  • If sodium levels drop below 130 mmol/L, implement fluid restriction if appropriate, as recommended by Praxis Medical Insights 1

Risk Mitigation

  • Avoid concomitant medications that may worsen hyponatremia, as recommended by Praxis Medical Insights 1
