Treatment of Nail Bed Laceration
Assessment and Initial Management
- The standard treatment for nail bed lacerations involves nail removal, meticulous cleaning and repair of the nail bed, and appropriate management of any associated complications such as infection or hematoma, as recommended by medical guidelines 1
Treatment Protocol for Nail Bed Laceration
- Nail removal is indicated when there is severe pain, pressure hematoma under the nail, subungual abscess formation, as part of the treatment protocol for nail bed lacerations 1
- The nail should be carefully removed to expose the nail bed laceration, allowing for proper visualization and repair of the underlying laceration 1
- The nail bed must be thoroughly cleaned during the procedure, and bacterial cultures should be obtained if infection is suspected, with prompt treatment of any identified infection using appropriate topical/oral antibiotics and antiseptics 1
- Regular nail trimming is necessary until the nail plate grows reattached, as part of the post-repair management 1
Special Considerations
- If pus is present, culture should be obtained and appropriate antibiotics initiated, according to the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology 2
- Antibiotics with anti-staphylococcus aureus and gram-positive coverage are recommended when infection is suspected, as stated in the Annals of Oncology 3
- Mid to high potency topical steroid ointment can be applied to nail folds twice daily for edema and pain, and daily dilute vinegar soaks may help reduce inflammation, as recommended by the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology 2
