Magnesium Supplementation for Mood and Sleep

  • The American College of Nutrition recommends a daily allowance of 320 mg elemental magnesium for women and 420 mg for men for general mood and sleep support 1

Dosing Recommendations

  • For general mood and sleep support, start with the recommended daily allowance and increase gradually according to tolerance, using liquid or dissolvable forms which are generally better tolerated than pills 1
  • Administer magnesium at night when intestinal transit is slowest to optimize absorption and align with sleep benefits 1

Forms to Avoid

  • The Gastroenterology society recommends avoiding magnesium oxide due to its poor bioavailability and common GI intolerance, including diarrhea, abdominal distension, and GI intolerance 2, 1

Important Precautions

  • The National Kidney Foundation advises avoiding all magnesium supplementation if you have renal insufficiency (creatinine clearance <20 mL/min) due to hypermagnesemia risk 1
  • Common side effects even with better-tolerated forms include mild diarrhea if doses are too high; start low and titrate up, and do not exceed 350 mg/day from supplements to avoid toxicity 1
  • If experiencing muscle cramps or refractory fatigue, check for concurrent potassium deficiency, as magnesium deficiency often coexists with hypokalemia and both must be corrected 1
  • Ensure adequate hydration when starting magnesium supplementation, as dehydration can worsen absorption and increase side effects 1
