Cefixime Dosage Adjustment in Renal Impairment

Clinical Considerations

  • Beta-lactam antibiotics, including cephalosporins, can cause neurotoxicity, particularly in patients with renal impairment, according to the Critical Care society 1, 2
  • The Critical Care society recommends monitoring for neurological symptoms in patients with renal dysfunction, as cefixime has lower pro-convulsive activity compared to some other cephalosporins 2
  • Signs of potential neurotoxicity include confusion, encephalopathy, myoclonus, seizures, and status epilepticus, as reported by the Critical Care society 1, 2
  • The Critical Care society notes that even with appropriate renal dose adjustments, neurological adverse effects can still occur with cephalosporins, highlighting the importance of vigilance in patients with severe renal impairment 1
