Fluoxetine-Induced Hypoglycemia in Patients with Diabetes

Risk Factors and Monitoring

  • Clinicians should consider an individual's risk for hypoglycemia when selecting diabetes medications and glycemic goals 1

Clinical Implications

  • For patients with diabetes who are prescribed fluoxetine, healthcare providers should monitor blood glucose levels more frequently after initiating fluoxetine therapy, and be prepared to adjust diabetes medication dosages to prevent hypoglycemic episodes 1
  • Patients should be informed that symptoms of hypoglycemia include shakiness, irritability, confusion, tachycardia, sweating, and hunger 1
  • Patients should be educated about recognizing and treating symptoms of hypoglycemia 2

Management of Hypoglycemia

  • If hypoglycemia occurs, treatment with fast-acting carbohydrates containing glucose is recommended 2
  • For severe hypoglycemia, glucagon administration may be necessary 2
