EMLA Cream Application Guidelines
Preparation and Application
- The British Journal of Dermatology recommends cleaning the area gently if needed, but avoiding any breaks in the skin, before applying EMLA cream 1
- The area should be covered with an occlusive dressing, such as Tegaderm, to enhance absorption, and an additional light-blocking dressing can be added if photosensitivity is a concern 1
Safety Considerations
- The American Academy of Pediatrics, as referenced in Praxis Medical Insights, advises exercising extreme caution in children, especially those under 12 months or weighing less than 10 kg, when applying EMLA cream 2
- Patients with an allergy to amide anesthetics should avoid using EMLA cream, as recommended by the guideline society 2
- EMLA cream should not be used in patients with recent sulfonamide antibiotic use or methemoglobinemia, according to the guideline society 2
Removal and Procedure Timing
- After removing the occlusive dressing and wiping off excess EMLA cream, the area should be cleaned with antiseptic solution, as recommended by the British Journal of Dermatology 1
