Hypercalcemia Clinical Presentation and Manifestations
Gastrointestinal Manifestations
- Nausea and vomiting are common gastrointestinal manifestations of moderate hypercalcemia, particularly in patients with calcium levels between 11-12 mg/dL 1, 2
- Abdominal pain is also a frequent complaint in patients with moderate hypercalcemia 1, 2
Renal Manifestations
- Polyuria, or excessive urination, is a recognized renal manifestation of hypercalcemia, often leading to dehydration 1, 3
- Polydipsia, or excessive thirst, is another common symptom in patients with hypercalcemia 1, 2
- Decreased glomerular filtration rate is a potential complication of severe hypercalcemia, particularly in patients with underlying renal impairment 3
Neurologic Manifestations
- Confusion is a common neurologic manifestation of hypercalcemia, particularly in patients with severe calcium elevations 1, 2
- Mental status changes and altered consciousness can occur in patients with severe hypercalcemia, especially when calcium levels exceed 14 mg/dL 1, 2
Cardiovascular Manifestations
- Bradycardia, or slow heart rate, is a potential cardiovascular complication of severe hypercalcemia 1
- Hypotension is another recognized cardiovascular manifestation of hypercalcemia, particularly in patients with severe calcium elevations 1
Skeletal System
- Bone pain and pathologic fractures are potential complications of chronic hypercalcemia, particularly in patients with underlying metabolic bone disease 4
