Biotin and Acne: Evidence Summary

Guideline Statements

  • The 2016 American Academy of Dermatology acne management guidelines do not list biotin as a causative or exacerbating factor for acne, indicating no recognized link in guideline-level recommendations. 1

Safety Profile of Biotin

  • Biotin demonstrates an excellent safety profile with no established upper tolerable intake level; adverse effects have not been reported in healthy adults taking up to 5 mg per day for extended periods. 2, 3
  • Doses as high as 300 mg per day have been administered safely in parenteral nutrition formulations without evidence of toxicity. 2, 3

Laboratory Interference Considerations

  • Oral biotin supplementation exceeding 5 mg per day should be stopped at least 72 hours before laboratory testing to avoid assay interference, particularly for thyroid function tests and cardiac troponin measurements. 2
