Retin-A 0.05% Topical Cream Guidelines
Application and Safety Instructions
- Apply a thin layer of Retin-A (tretinoin) 0.05% cream once daily at bedtime to the entire affected area, not just individual lesions, to minimize photosensitivity concerns 1
- Use a pea-sized amount for the entire face when treating facial acne 2
- Apply to all acne-prone areas, not just visible lesions, to prevent new microcomedone formation 1
- Keep away from eyes, mouth, nasal creases, and mucous membranes to avoid irritation 2
- Daily sunscreen use is mandatory as tretinoin increases photosensitivity 3
- Avoid ultraviolet light exposure, including tanning beds and sun lamps, to minimize the risk of photosensitivity 2
- Weather extremes, such as wind and cold, can cause additional irritation and should be minimized 2
Combination Therapy and Special Populations
- The American Academy of Dermatology strongly recommends multimodal therapy for acne management, including combining Retin-A with benzoyl peroxide for inflammatory acne 4
- For post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, Retin-A can be combined with azelaic acid for enhanced results 3
- Avoid combining Retin-A with other keratolytic agents or photosensitizing medications that may increase irritation 2
- Pediatric use of Retin-A is established in patients ≥10 years of age 2
- Retin-A should be avoided in pregnancy due to its pregnancy category C classification 2
