Lorazepam Dosing for Flight Anxiety

Standard Dosing Approach

  • For flight anxiety in healthy adults, starting with 0.5-1 mg orally, taken 1.5-2 hours before boarding, is recommended to allow peak plasma levels during the flight, with a maximum single dose of 2 mg, as suggested by the British Medical Journal 1, 2
  • For elderly or debilitated patients, reducing the dose to 0.25-0.5 mg maximum is advised, according to the British Medical Journal 1, 2

Important Safety Warnings

  • The American Academy of Travel Medicine advises avoiding alcohol consumption entirely when taking lorazepam for flight anxiety, as this combination significantly increases sedation, cognitive impairment, and risk of disinhibition or delirium, as reported in the Journal of Travel Medicine 4
  • Respiratory depression risk increases when combining lorazepam with other sedatives, as noted in medical guidelines 3

Special Population Adjustments

  • For elderly patients, the maximum single dose should not exceed 0.5 mg, as recommended by the British Medical Journal 1, 2
  • For patients with COPD or respiratory disease, using lower doses or avoiding lorazepam entirely is advised due to respiratory depression risk, according to medical guidelines 3
