Treatment of Olecranon Bursitis

Conservative Management

  • The American College of Radiology recommends radiographs as the initial imaging modality to exclude fractures, dislocations, or bony abnormalities in patients with olecranon bursitis 2, 1
  • Rest and activity modification, including avoiding pressure on the affected elbow, is a first-line treatment for olecranon bursitis 1
  • Use of open-backed elbow protection to reduce pressure on the affected area is a recommended non-pharmacological approach for olecranon bursitis 1
  • Ice application through a wet towel for 10-minute periods to reduce swelling and pain is a recommended non-pharmacological approach for olecranon bursitis 1
  • Topical NSAIDs may be effective with fewer systemic side effects for the treatment of olecranon bursitis 1

Special Considerations

  • The American Heart Association, as published in Circulation, recommends a stepped care approach starting with acetaminophen or non-acetylated salicylates before considering NSAIDs for patients with cardiovascular disease or risk factors 3
  • The American Heart Association, as published in Circulation, recommends using the lowest effective dose of NSAIDs for the shortest duration in patients with cardiovascular disease or risk factors 3
