  • Valproate/valproic acid, carbamazepine, gabapentin, and pregabalin are associated with significant weight gain and should be avoided or minimized when weight is a concern, according to the American Diabetes Association 1
  • The American Gastroenterological Association suggests that switching to lamotrigine can be considered as a weight-neutral alternative for patients on weight-promoting antiepileptics, particularly those with obesity, diabetes, or metabolic syndrome 2
  • Topiramate may induce weight loss and can be used to counteract weight gain from other medications, as recommended by the American Gastroenterological Association 2
