Acetazolamide and Sodium Depletion

Mechanism of Action

  • Acetazolamide inhibits carbonic anhydrase in the proximal convoluted tubule, reducing sodium reabsorption at this site, according to the American Journal of Kidney Diseases 1, 2

Clinical Evidence

  • In the ADVOR trial, acetazolamide added to loop diuretics resulted in greater natriuresis and urine volume compared to placebo, as reported in the American Journal of Kidney Diseases 1, 2
  • The American Heart Association recommends using acetazolamide to enhance decongestion when combined with loop diuretics, as it improves decongestion irrespective of baseline serum sodium levels 1, 2
